It stands tall in East Hattiesburg as one of the finest public safety buildings in the Gulf South. Many, many thanks to all who helped make the day possible...

City Hall Turns 100!

Hey, Hattiesburg! Today is a very special day in the life of our city. Today marks 100 years since City Hall was opened at 200 Forrest Street. It was 10 a.m. on January 19, 1923 when Mayor WSF Tatum led a walking parade from the previous court down to this building with an ordinance just passed - declaring 200 Forrest Street would be Hattiesburg City Hall. For 100 years, countless issues have c...

    I was on vacation near where the tornado hit in Hattiesburg at the time, and I turned on WDAM TV Channel 7 and we saw on the radar this large red supercell and so we race out of the hotel room we were staying in and we raced to our car and we sped out of the garage and onto the street and we see the tornado come towards us on Hardy Street we were right behind Ross Andrews and the group he was with in the first car and as soon as the tornado was coming to cross Hardy I immediately told people to back up so we can back up safely and then you hear the loud roar of 200 mile per hour winds and we saw our front windshield just shatter to pieces and then as soon as the storm crossed the road we saw it head towards 34th Avenue and all the way towards Petal and then after that it was over. All of us were extremely lucky to survive because the vehicle I was driving was a 2013 GMC Savana van and it had a 3 prong electrical outlet mounted on the dash and it had my Midland WR300 plugged into the outlet and my weather radio goes off indicating a tornado warning issued for Lamar and Marion Counties from the Jackson National Weather Service and as soon as the warning was issued we got another warning but it was a severe thunderstorm warning also issued for Lamar and Marion Counties and then the last header warning was a flash flood warning also issued for Lamar and Marion Counties. A half hour later it became a civil danger warning with the severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings issued for Lamar and Marion Counties the cancelled tornado warning for those same two counties issued had triggered the civil danger warning. We saw multiple homes and businesses totaled same with vehicles and everything in it’s path. The next year I return to Mississippi because I had booked a vacation in Meridian but it was late in the evening on April 28th 2014 for spring vacation and I was listening to the NWS forecast for Lauderdale and Scott Counties and then all of a sudden 3 piercing buzzes were heard coming from my Midland WR300 and then the continuous beeping for the warning signal is heard and my wife checks the weather radio and pops up saying tornado warning and she tells me a tornado warning is being broadcasted and we listen to the message and it was serious right from the beginning because it was issued for Lauderdale and Scott Counties and we were staying in a Marriott hotel in Lauderdale County in the city of Meridian that night for a week and so I open up my MDT computer and I see on my radar a large red supercellular storm bouncing all around in the two counties that were warned and so we drive to Scott County to the city of Forest and we hear the Sentry 40V2T sirens go off then a Whelen siren goes off and we were right behind another group of storm chasers the whole time and then we see the tornado hit and then we head to Lauderdale County to the city of Meridian and they pull off into another hotel near the hotel we were staying at and so we get to the hotel and you hear the Federal Signal 2T22 sirens sound and the tornado was 3/4 of a mile away from us and it was near Interstate 20 and Highway 45 and then the tornado heads northeast

    I’ve survived a tornado head on so I know the panic that takes over you. And I understand wanting to warn everyone you can but don’t put yourself in danger. Im thankful the couple are ok.

    You're running FROM a tornado. The tornado is coming towards you on the rear RIGHT hand side, and what did you idiots do at an intersection....? You turn right, DIRECTLY in the path of the tornado, instead of turning left. 🙄🤦🏾‍♂️

    My house wasn't far from the tail end of this thing in Petal. Thankfully nothing more than patio furniture and a BBQ were damaged. I was at work in Hattiesburg at the Best Buy you can see in the video when it came behind our building. A few years later, another large tornado came through following almost the exact same path.

      So I have a question regarding those businesses. Did people know there was a tornado right behind them? Did you have someone from the outside going store to store to warn you guys? And how do you bunker down in a building like that?

    • @dman38
      @dman38 Рік тому

      @@AlexTheOilersFan we knew it was heading towards us, but had to idea how close it was when it went behind us. We gathered the staff and the customers and moved towards the back of the building . We could see the parking lot light poles bend to one side as the tornado past, then snap back up as it passed.

    If you don't trust Psalm 91...then you ain't got no business trusting a Doctor. And the bible states over 63 times not to trust in man. You should know that. What are you up to?

    • @matthewtenney2898
      @matthewtenney2898 2 роки тому

      In Ephesians, Paul talks about people doing God's work and he mentions teachers and preachers. So the Apostle Paul is expecting people to trust what these teachers and preachers are saying. And I would hope that we might allow someone to teach us how to bake bread for example. When the Bible says don't trust in man, it means something else. I think it means that our ultimate goal in life is not to be centered around the approval of any human or society. Our ultimate goal in life is to know our Lord, to come to love Him and to find our joy in Him. So trust the doctor's medical advice but don't worship the doctor or the doctor's science.

    I’m glad we have a mayor that cares about his citizens and their health. Other than being a little annoying for some people mask are not that big a issue to wear as he said with the trade off to do more. I personally have gotten comfortable and have bought 12 different types of mask that showcase the things I like and am apart of! It has been a fashion accessory for lot of people and we don’t know what the coming months will do during flu season. It’s better to take the caution and get to have events when we can. The President and Governor think it’s not needed much anymore, but that’s not what the “professionals” are saying or advising. They should pay more attention to the data. Thank you Mayor Barker for your service and concern! 👏😁

    Some people just shouldn’t be driving it really is not that hard to distance yourself they kept driving straight while it was behind them. Check which direction it is going gain a little distance and find a road that is left or right depending which direction the tornado is going. Know if the road has no dead ends or not and gun it and don’t stop you can’t outrun it but you can get out of the path if you know where it’s going.
